Yoichi Shimatsu

SHIMIZU, Yoichi Clark is editor in

residence at the HKU Journalism and

Media Studies Centre and formerly

general editor of The Japan Times Weekly.

He has extensively written on

contemporary urban culture in Asia

for publications in Japan, Europe and

the United States, including reporting

on the growth of megacities for Choices,

the UN Development Programme magazine.

The creative industries and high-tech media that are

defining the emerging "global culture" of the 21st century

are clustered along two corridors, the West Coast

(Hollywood-Silicon Valley) and East Asia (Tokyo-Hong Kong).

The speaker will discuss the special characteristics

of these two world-leading zones, including their differing

attitudes toward movement, change, competition and space.
